Narrowly Protected

A view of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, which connects Staten Island with Brooklyn.  It was named for  Giovanni da Verrazano.  He was the first European explorer, in 1524, to sail into New York Harbor.  The "Narrows" is the section of the New York Bay separating the upper and lower halves.

This picture was taken from
Fort Wadsworth, one of the oldest military installations in the nation, situated directly under the east end of the bridge.  It's now a state park.  The fort was closed in 1994 and up until then, was the longest continually manned military installation in the United States.

Manned because you know, someone needs to protect Manhattan from being attacked by ships in from lands unknown via the Atlantic.

Great picture. That's where the NYC marathon starts. On November 3, I'll be running over that bridge to get to Central Park. I've seen hundreds of photos of the VN bridge, but this one is the best.

Thanks for the compliment! And how COOL that you're running the marathon! Through all the boroughs. At least the starting and ending points are pleasant. :) Have fun!!
