A Taco Garage Worth Pulling Into

This week we ate at a restaurant that's been in Tucson for a couple of years but one we've never had a desire to try.  The location closest to us is in the perimeter of the Tucson Mall parking lot.  We've driven by many times, commented on the cheesy name, and passed on it as a chain we didn't have any interest in.  But then Ed discovered that this place was listed as one of the restaurants on his American Express rewards list so we thought we'd give it a try.

And it's not really a chain.  Not nationally, anyway.  We found out from our waitress that the restaurant is locally owned, by the same people who own the legendary El Charro restaurants, and that there are locations here and in Phoenix.

The name I thought was cheesy?  Sir Veza's Taco Garage.

The menu was pretty good.  Different.  Mexican stuff, but different.  With cool names.

The waitress suggested we start with the Johnny Vegas Roll for an appetizer - chicken, avocado, cilantro cream cheese, jalapeño slaw, chipotle wrap.  It was served sliced with a drizzle of something on top.  They were pretty good.

The place was decorated like a garage - car parts, clip-on work lights, old car bench seats, chains hanging from shock springs, everything "rusted" - surrounded by garage doors which on cooler days, are probably open.

I didn't take any pictures of our actual food, because Mexican food always seems to look like one big blob of cheese on a plate, but what we had was actually pretty good.  Very flavorful with a really nice presentation.

I had the Big 3 Combo - a soft shredded beef taco, cheese enchilada, and corn tamal.  Rice and beans on the side.  It was a bit too much for me to finish everything, but I enjoyed every bite.

Ed had the Roasted Poblano Chile Relleno - stuffed with barbacoa carnitas, chipotle crema, casero, homemade squash calabacitas, and black beans.  He finished it all.  If there's a Chile Relleno on the menu, especially stuffed with meat, Ed is all over it.  

Their tagline is "We Fix Hungry", but this car shows that they also fix thirsty - they have a large selection of beers of all kinds and even in the afternoon, the bar area was busy.  

There were other things on the menu I thought looked interesting so we'll certainly give it another try. 

I might even try their version of the Sonoran Dog.
