Saw this guy at the motorcycle shop Ed goes to. The parking lot was full of City of Tucson cop motorcycles and he was retrieving his.

Bike Prep
Ed has been working this week on getting his bike ready for a trip out to the Imperial Sand Dunes in California, intending to catch up with my brother and nephews who are already out there.
It's been reaaaalllly freezing here, so he's not sure when he's going to go, but he's been packing the boxes, preparing the flags necessary to ride in that area, deciding on which things he needs to have, etc.
Personally, I don't get the appeal of riding in dirt all day, then sleeping in tents at night, but whatever. It's definitely a guy thing.
I fear the day when Ed convinces me to sleep in a tent.

The Three Rs In Strawberry
The Strawberry Schoolhouse, located in Strawberry, Arizona, was dedicated as a Historical Monument in 1981 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. It's been called the "oldest standing schoolhouse in Arizona".
Built in 1885 of pine logs from trees that were cut and transported from the Mogollon Rim. The interior was said to be "elegant", with wallpaper and factory-ordered individual desks rather than standard tables and chairs.
Students ages 5 to 20 were educated here and the schoolhouse had an organ that was used for social events and and church services that were held in the building.
Today the school is open to the public from May through mid-October on weekends and holidays, or you can call to make an appointment to tour on other days.
The schoolhouse is cared for by the Pine-Strawberry Archaeological and Historical Society and can be found on Fossil Creek Road, less than two miles west of Arizona Highway 87 in the town of Strawberry.
Read more details about it here.

Lodged In The Mountains
We didn't make any hotel reservations before our trip to follow the AZBDR, we just thought we'd find something along the way. It was mid-week, off season, so our chances were good.
I'm glad we didn't book a room because we would have wound up staying at the Forest Lakes Lodge. I'm sure plenty of people stayed at Forest Lakes in the 35 years they've been around and liked it just fine. But when we got there and went to look at the room - something Ed has learned we must do at sketchy-looking places - I decided it was more Murder Lodge than Lakes Lodge. It was just old, and depressing, and run down. There had to be another choice.
Of course, the boys had initially planned on camping, in a tent, on the ground, so they probably would have stayed if I wasn't hanging around, and I didn't want to be a pain in the ass, but I just couldn't stay there. No. Way. Thankfully, they were both willing to find something else. We thought we'd just go to Payson, but on the way there we saw a sign for Kohl's Ranch Lodge and turned in their direction.
When we drove up and I saw the lodge exterior, I was already happier, and stepping into the lobby sealed the deal. Look how pretty! And log cabin-y. And lodge-like. I was pleasantly surprised. The front desk staff was amazing and the rate was fantastic - $80 for a studio room, right off the main lobby area and close to the parking log. What a deal!
We were starving by the time we got there since the restaurant in Young we had planned on eating at was closed, so we decided to check in first, take showers, and eat at the restaurant on the property.
I loved the room! It was huge, clean, and the bed was a dream. Crisp white sheets, four amazing pillows, a table with two chairs, and a little, enclosed patio with seating that led out to the front of the building.
We had a fridge, microwave, coffee maker, toaster. The lobby sold food items (frozen waffles, microwaveable meals, coffee creamer, etc.) that were just enough to supplement if you needed a little something extra. The only negative to mention was the oddly minuscule bathroom, it was child-sized. Overall though, I'd give the place a thumbs up.
We had dinner at the hotel restaurant, called Zane Grey Country Barbecue. They had great appetizers, amazing wood-fired pizzas, and some kickass fall-off-the-bone ribs and pulled pork. Everything was delicious!
We slept like rocks and got an early start the next morning. The guys headed off to Winona and I was going to mosey up to Flagstaff to meet them after they completed the next section of the AZBDR.

The Kohl's Ranch Lodge is definitely a place I'd stay again. A simple mountain lodge nestled in the largest Ponderosa Pine forest in the world, at the base of the Mogollon Rim, with views for miles.
It was the perfect place to spend the night.

Heading To The Tall Pines
I was in the pickup truck following the boys out of Young, Arizona, as we all headed north on State Highway 288, officially known as the Desert to Tall Pines Scenic Road.
We would end the day at Kohl's Ranch, where we would stay for the night before they headed off on the rest of the AZBDR the next morning.
The Young Highway is part dirt, partly paved, and gets high up into the hills of the Tonto National Forest, taking you across the Mogollon Rim.
A very scenic ride!

I saw several jutting from the rocks and took a few shots myself, but Ed got this one somewhere along the trail he was on. Although he was in a remote area that's not traveled often, there's still that one idiot who leaves a beer bottle behind.

Right Of Way
![]() |
| Ed snapped this picture of his riding buddy deciding who will go first, him or the free-range cow. |
This is the description the AZBDR website gives regarding the route:
"The Arizona Backcountry Discovery Route (AZBDR) is a 750-mile scenic ride across the state of Arizona, beginning at the Mexico border and finishing at the Utah border. This South to North route consists of mostly remote dirt roads and winds through the remote high desert country, jagged canyons, wild lands, pristine mountain ranges, and a surprising number of water crossings. It passes through iconic locations including the Mogollon Rim, Sunset Crater National Monument, Grand Canyon and the Navajo Nation. The route includes dirt, gravel, and pavement surfaces and may include rocks, ruts, sand, mud, and snow depending on the time of year and conditions. The route can be completed in 4-6 days depending on pace, and is also accessible by four-wheel drive vehicles, as the entire route is at least double-track."
He and a friend started at the southern end of the route, on the border Mexico and Arizona. He made it to Flagstaff before we had to come home to go back to work. While the guys rode the BDR, taking trails in the wilderness, I took the nearest roads and met up with them at several spots along the way.
He and a friend started at the southern end of the route, at the Coronado National Memorial, then rode along the Arizona-Mexico border for a bit, before heading north. While the guys rode the BDR, taking off-road trails in the wildness, I drove the pickup truck on the nearest real roads and met up with them along the way. We landed in Globe the first night, and four days later we were all in Flagstaff. Unfortunately, we got called for a load and had to head back to Tucson for work but Ed plans to finish the portion from Flagstaff to the Utah border soon.
There was a lot of scenery to see, especially further north as the elevation and landscape changed, and I'll post a few pictures that each of us took along the way.

This train comes right through the town, creeping right in front of the police station in Globe, Arizona. Cars able to pass it on either side riding parallel to the train. Even though it's not going fast, it's a bit unsettling to be that close to a moving behemoth.

Dream. Plan. Ride.

I think a more appropriate name would be the "End of the Relationship."
Ed has been riding around our area here in Southern Arizona, and he went on a day trip with our friend MacG, and also participated in a two-day event in Flagstaff hosted by the Coconino Trail Riders. He's trying to get in as much riding time as he can.
We were planning on going to this event next week but it looks like we may have to work. I have my motorcycle license, but I definitely won't be riding. It's more of an Ed thing. I'd just be there for the food and blog post pictures. I watched the video on this website by the guy who owns the company and it seems like a great way to ride some terrain with experienced riders giving tips along the way. Of course, Ed (and most men) don't think they need any instruction, but I feel better knowing he's reinforcing what he already knows. Especially if he plans on one day going to South America.
In the meantime, he plans on riding the Arizona Backcountry Discovery Route (AZBDR) which runs from the Mexico/Arizona border to the Arizona/Utah border, in the very near future. It's a 4-6 day trip depending on how much ground the rider covers in each section.
And because I'm trying to be a supportive wife, I bought him a Butler Motorcycle Map, which are supposedly some of the best of their kind, that covers the route he's planning on riding. The map, in addition to his Garmin inReach Satellite Communicator, should suffice for his navigation.
And I will be able to breathe a teensy bit easier.

Skull Rider
Ed and MacG went riding this weekend and took a trip down to Arivaca. On the way back, they came across the abandoned Longhorn Grill in Amado, Arizona. MacG snapped this picture of Ed, making it look as if he were exiting the skull.
Duuude.

Talking To The Toms
In the photo above is a Broad Breasted White Turkey. It's the most common commercial broad breasted strain of eating turkeys today. In fact, it's what most Americans will be sitting down to a table with on Thanksgiving.
These two turkeys in these photos belong to a friend of Ed's. While Ed was talking motorcycles and planning his next trail ride with his friend, I had an opportunity to see get close to the turkeys and capture a few shots of them wandering around the yard.
Most of the following turkey information I gathered online, cobbled together from different sources and mostly plagiarized. Please don't sue me.
A male turkey is called a "tom" and a female turkey is called a "hen". Both of these turkeys are toms.
In the photo below, you can see the turkey's ear, his snood, and his wattle.
The ear is the whitish ring on the side of his head. A Tom (male) turkey hears extremely well.
The snood is the fleshy piece hanging down over the turkey's beak. The snood is longer in males than females and they have no known function. When the tom is relaxed, the snood is short. When the tom struts - as they were doing when I took these photos, with their tailfeathers all fanned out - the snood engorges with blood and hangs down further over the beak.
The wattle is the piece that hangs down under his neck. The snood and the wattle fill up with blood and turn bright red when a tom wants to attract a hen but can also turn blue if the turkey is scared.

The fleshy, bumpy growths on the head and neck are called caruncles.
The male turkey, a Tom, has a tuft of long, bristle-like fibers attached to the breast called a beard. You can see them here - they are the grey strands poking out from his breast. It can be anywhere from an inch long to more than 10 inches long, although that's rare. The beard is not hair, it's a modified feather that forms a stiff bristle. Beards vary in length and thickness and can have various curls and kinks.
The turkeys were extremely docile (except when they started fighting with each other - which I'll post a video of in an upcoming post, or you can see it on my Instagram here and here) and followed me around the yard. They allowed me to touch them, which is how I discovered their extremely soft feather. I was actually petting and talking to a turkey.
In this photo, you can see their fan, the prominent feature when a turkey struts. The fan is made up of 18 tail feathers 12 to 15 inches long. Adult males have tail feathers that are uniform in length.
These turkeys are flightless birds and they were much bigger than I expected, at least 25 pounds each.
And although we got chicken eggs from Jim the last time Ed was there, he didn't have any turkey eggs on hand. From what I've read, commercial turkey farmers (of which Jim is not) aren't in the egg business, they'd have to wait a whole lot longer to collect them since they don't lay as often as chickens do, and they're expensive.
After meeting these two guys, you'd think I'd feel bad about looking forward to Thanksgiving. I don't.
Pass the cranberry sauce!

Living In A Boy's World
Here's a photo of my nephew sailing over the Imperial Sand Dunes in California.
Just west of Yuma, Arizona, in the state of California, lies one of the nation's largest mass of inland sand dunes. The erg is approximately 45 miles long by 6 miles wide. We've driven through this area on our way to California, but have never done any exploring.
Granted, there's not much to explore but sand, and there's no way to do it other than on a motorcycle or in an all-terrain vehicle. And it's hot. So as you'd imagine, I'm not doing any kind of exploring in this place.
My brother has been to the dunes many times over the years with his best friend from high school. He's also taken my nephews out there a few times to ride. They love it. And now that Ed has a motorcycle, I suspect he'll be going on one of the future trips. I'm already concerned.
The boys like to show off, jump from dangerous heights (some of the dunes rise 300 feet), and drive faster than they would anywhere else they've ridden. There have been several injuries over the years, including a few this past week. Nothing serious in the minds of men as you might imagine, and so far they've all come back with operational limbs so it constitutes a good time.
A natural draw for off-road enthusiasts, The Imperial Sand Dunes see more than a million visitors each year. That's a whole lotta people coming out to see what's essentially a giant sandbox.
And the boys playing in it have graduated from shovels and toy trucks to helmets and toys with wheels.
