Soaking In European Bubbles

It doesn’t matter where I am in the world, I seem to get stuck doing laundry. Even on a European vacation!  My first foreign laundry experience took place in Hungary.
By Day 5 of our vacation, I needed to wash a few things.  Luckily, on one of his walks through the city of Budapest, MacG found a cute little laundromat.  It was called Bubbles.

Great little place.  Colorful, modern, seemingly easy to use.
Hungarian is an impossible language to decipher.  Words don't even resemble English words.  Luckily, using a washing machine and dryer is fairly straightforward once you figure out where the coins go.
This place had a change machine with different language options which made things a little easier.
Prices were pretty standard for laundry - 1,400 HUF ($4.90 USD) for a wash, 1,200 HUF ($4.20 USD) for a dry. A HUF is a Hungarian Forint, the currency of Hungary.
They even had a comfy little lounge area.

The laundromat was clean, well-lit, had nice big folding tables, and is open 24 hours.  We were there in the morning so enjoyed breakfast at a great little restaurant right across the courtyard.

Total win.

Laundry, Y'all

It's been raining for weeks in the south. Everything is soaked and overflowing. Rivers are swollen, fields are flooded. I had laundry to do.

We were in Louisiana for a week and it was so hot and humid, I couldn't bear the thought of sitting in a hot laundromat, so we put it off. Now I had two giant machines stuffed with clothes, sheets, and towels that needed to be washed. Ugh.

We were finally able to get it done in North Carolina, where thankfully it wasn't raining and by some stroke of good luck, the weather was cool.

And the owner of the laundromat was a nice Southern guy married to a Westchester County New Yorker. We had stuff to talk about.

Now the laundry is done and I don't have to worry about it for another few weeks.

And now I've got another photo to add to my Laundry category.

I Do Laundry And Bring Strawberries

Laundry day.  I dread it.  Even though I have enough clothing, sheets, towels to go a month or more without having to do laundry, after that point, I have a giant laundry bag staring at me from the corner.

After laundry, we went grocery shopping and had in interesting trucking-related moment.

We were in Harris Teeter picking up a few groceries for the week.  Ed was in the produce department getting strawberries.  He met back up with me a few aisles over and said, "They're out of strawberries."

"They're out of strawberries??  Completely?"

"Yep.  The produce guy said the truck comes in tomorrow." he said.

"Oh.  Well, that sucks."

"Yeah," he chuckled. "It would be nice if they remembered how their stuff gets here."

He's exactly right.  If it weren't for a truck bringing those strawberries to the store, that guy wouldn't have a job stacking them in the produce department.

It would be nice for people to remember that when they're making it difficult for us to park in their parking lots, communities, malls, etc.

** Technically, I don't personally bring the strawberries, but you get the drift.

Clean Panties In The Corner Pocket

In the eleven years I've been doing laundry on the road, this is the first time I've been in a laundromat with a pool table in it.

I can only assume that because it's in a town with a military base, there must be a lot of guys doing their own laundry, and guys waiting on their laundry need something to do, right?

Only possible thing that make sense.

Squeaky Clean Reflection

Another town, another laundromat.  That's me in the spin cycle.

Finding a place to do laundry on the road is sometimes a challenge but I'm the master of finding laundromats with truck parking.  Although, this time we only had the tractor, so parking was a lot easier.  And we only had one load!  That's a first.  We were done in less than ninety minutes.

I always search for laundromats on my iPad using the map feature.  That way, I can see how far away they are and can also look at the satellite image to determine the parking situation.

And this week I found an app on iTunes that finds nearby laundromats.  It's called Laundromatic.  Next time laundry day rolls around, I'll give it a whirl.  You should check it out too - it's free!

Now if only I could find an app to do my laundry.

Big Coin Was A Big Hit

I do so much laundry on the road, I actually have a laundry category for this blog to document all the places we've been through pictures.  The best laundromats, in my opinion, are the ones that are open 24 hours.  You never have to worry about making it there in time for the "last load".

I always hate the idea of doing laundry but Ed usually urges me to "just get it done".  I have to admit, once it's done, I'm happier.

The problem is, we can go weeks without doing laundry.  We have so many clothes, it's just not right.  Actually, I think Ed has even more clothes than I do.  Now that's just not right.

But really, I think I'd rather do laundry on the road.  I can throw it all in at once, dry it all at once, and fold it all at once.  When I do the same amount of laundry at home, it takes me all night, most times into the next day.  I have to get up and down from my comfy TV-watching chair, transfer clothes from washer to dryer, fold in stages, pile things all over the laundry room, and then cart it all back out to the truck.

This laundromat was great.  It was huge, it wasn't as hot as most of them are, it had ample truck parking, and there was an awesome pizzeria a few doors down.

Sold!

What A Guy Will Do To Get Out Of Watching Girl TV

Yesterday, my handsome boyfriend claimed his rightful spot on the wallpaper of my iPad, and today he did all the laundry.

Hey!  What the hell is going on here??  I do the laundry.  He helps, but it's my job.  It's like my only real job.  But I didn't want to do it.  I wanted to wait and do it over the weekend, but he was so eager to get it done.  I was feeling guilty and said I'd help, but he said, "No, that's okay.  I want to do it."

Who am I to argue?  I let him go.  After he was gone for a little while, I sent a text.  The throwing the clothes in the machine isn't the labor intensive part, it's the folding that takes the most time.

Just sit and relax.  Isn't that sweet??

I was getting a little suspicious though, that he was so eager.  Of course, I didn't have too much to worry about since he was in the truck stop, but sometimes the women there are so excited to see someone in their thirties walk in, and not some guy over sixty wearing a dirty ball cap and greasy t-shirt, that they go a little crazy when my Eddie's around.  I've seen a few heads turn, but I haven't had to bitch slap anyone yet.

He likes to pull my leg though.

Personally, I find it even more suspicious that he chose the exact moment Grey's Anatomy was going to start to be doing laundry.  And there was so much of it he missed Scandal too.  Hmmmm.

Once the laundry is done though, I'm so happy, because it means I don't have to move the laundry bag from one spot to another in the truck to keep it out of the way.  Now there's an idea - I think our next truck is going to have a hamper cabinet.

I have the. best. guy. ever.

Laundry Options For A Modern Trucker

Every time we have to do laundry, Ed and I have a discussion that lasts at least thirty minutes - him insisting we do it right that moment and me pleading to do it any other moment.  Or never.  I hate doing laundry.

I was never very bothered by doing laundry, but that was probably because I never had to regularly do a minimum of five loads.  It never fails - we intend to do it when we have less than one bag but it always winds up being two if not three bags and I'm always inclined to just throw it all away and buy new clothes.  And towels, sheets, and washcloths.

Yesterday Ed won.  We did laundry at our first stop, instead of later tonight or tomorrow or Sunday or...never.  Remember never?  We haven't done laundry in a truck stop in years, we always go to a laundromat since we typically have so much.  And I really hate to tie up the machines in a truck stop when those guys usually only have one load and want to get in and out fast.  But Ed went in and scoped out the place and came back to tell me that the laundry room was empty.  Shit.  No way I was getting out of it.

The place was empty.  And air-conditioned.  And there was only one guy in the TV lounge.  And they had this:
I figured it was something new, but it might actually have been around for a while since it's been so long since we've done laundry in a truck stop.  No quarters needed, just pay with a credit card.  How awesome is that??  Has anyone out there seen these before?
One of the coolest features it has was the ability to receive a text message when your wash or dry cycle is done.  Rather than hanging around, timing each cycle, walking in and out to check whether they're done or not, we were able to go into the restaurant to get a bite to eat and we got a text just as we were finishing up.  Very convenient.
And that's not the only thing technology brings when it comes to laundry.  Look at this:
I hope this catches on everywhere.  I'd love to see it in regular laundromats too.  Then I can just sit in the truck in the parking lot and wait for a text telling me everything is ready and I need to come in and fold.

Boy, the things you learn when you step out into the real world of trucking.

Looking And Smelling Good Behind The Wheel Of A Big Rig

Nine washing machines. That's how many I need to do our laundry; because that's how many we'll fill with what we usually accumulate, and why it takes me so long to do it, and why I dread it.

OK, so maybe I don't need nine machines every time, but it's pretty damn close. We have so many clothes in the truck that I can go at least two weeks without having to wash anything. I have a bazillion pairs of undies and Ed has equally as many pairs of socks. Jeans I can wear two (or even three) days in a row depending on what I'm doing and Ed wears coveralls when he's doing anything but sitting behind the wheel. This way, he doesn't ruin a "good outfit" by strapping, chaining or tarping or doing any other kind of work on the truck.

Maintaining a good appearance, with fresh clothing and good grooming, is essential for us out here. You never know who you might meet and first impressions are important. Looking good is a big part of feeling good and being treated well. My favorite line to hear, directed toward either one of us, is "You don't look like a truck driver."

Probably the biggest contributor to the laundry bulk are sheets and towels; you'd think I robbed Bed, Bath and Beyond with all the sets I have. They take up a lot of room in the laundry bag. It's also one of the reasons I don't like to do my laundry at a truck stop;  none of the machines are big enough. In addition to not having enough machines (when they even work), they never have the big, triple loaders.

One laundromat we went to in Norfolk, Virginia, had a machine that could handle five loads. That was a dream laundromat. You'll never find that in a truckstop. So when I wash our comforter and blankets, I need those big machines.  Last time I had laundry to do, I waited until we go thome, which was both good and bad. On the up side, I like it because the washer and dryer is right off the family room, which means I can sit in the lazy boy for hours on end and watch TV between loads. On the down side, it means I have to sit in the lazy boy for hours on end and watch TV between loads. Using a laundromat and being able to fill several machines at once, cuts my laundry time by more than half.

Another reason I don't like to use the machines in the truckstops is because of the very fact that I have so much laundry. When I'm hogging all four machines, it means some other driver can't do his one load and get back on the road. Most guys I see carrying in their laundry only have a small bag. It's rare that I see one of them spread out over every machine in the place.  It's convenient for them to do it right where they park, shower, eat and sleep. I don't want to get in their way.

Finding a local laundromat isn't all that easy, and finding one with truck parking is next to impossible. I've always been good at getting into some pretty tight spots, thanks to my Grandfather's parking lessons, administered from the front seat of his giant 1970 Cadillac Coup Deville. In my young teenage eyes, that thing was as big then as our truck is to me today.

It looked just like the car in this photo, with that loooong nose and those beautiful lines. The color was beautiful too, it was called Regency Gold Firemist.  It was equipped with bench seats in the front, and a tremendous back seat.  They were brown leather.

My grandmother would use Lemon Pledge to "wax" the seats, which was a real treat for my brother and I, because whenever my grandfather went aroud turns, our little bodies would slide from one side of the car, allllll the way to the other side. When you're five years old, the trip across the back seat of a Cadillac is a long and exhilirating one.

Did you notice how I said I'm good at getting INTO tight spots? Uh, yeah....I'm good with the in part, but I'm not always so great getting out. With the truck, that is. I always try, and sometimes I'm successful.  And it usually happens in the middle of the night when Ed is sleeping, so I'm high-fiving myself all alone. But when I can't get out, when I'm in what some people might call "a pickle", that my friends, is where Eddie comes into play.

Not only can he park in a thimble with his eyes closed, but he can get out of one too. When he does it, the trailer just seems to get all bendy and goes exactly where he puts it. When I try to get it to be all bendy, thinking I'll be able to maneuver it wherever I want, the reality doesn't always support the plan my mind hatched. But that's a story for another day, let's get back to the laundromat deal.

Since we're not parking a Cadillac, finding a laundromat with truck parking is a challenge. I often use Google to locate local laundromats. You just put in the name of the town or the local zip code, along with the word "laundry" or "laundromat" and I can usually get a list of places in the area. It's not a complete list, but it's a good start. And where there's one laundromat, there are usually others nearby. Once I find one I like (and sometimes I do it just like I'd pick a horse - by an appealing name), I employ Google Earth to take a look at the place itself and the surrounding area. If I can park on the street, or in a lot nearby, I'm there.

Try it out sometime.  Some of the best I've found are the one in Norfolk, the 24-hour Miami, FL one and one in Lakewood, NY (which had tractor parking only - it's a VERY small place, but beautifully decorated...and there's a PHENOMENAL Wegman’s nearby).

I've got all sorts of tips and tricks for how to do things in a truck off the beaten path.  In fact, I can fill a whole chapter of a book with them.

Hey...now there's an idea.

Weekend Update

I have seen more laundromats across the country than one could ever dream of.  I don't know why someone would dream of touring laudromats,  but if they do, it can be an untapped niche in the book market:  1,000 Laundromats To See Before You Die

We had class again today, cramming in all sorts of information and then taking a test to see which parts stuck.  We  both did well on the test but still have tons of material to go over.  Lunch was the best part of the day - a good 'ol Southern barbeque -  BBQ Pork, BBQ Turkey, macaroni & cheese, sweet potato casserole, green beans, baked beans, rolls, salad, and banana cream pudding!

After class, we headed back to the truck (we rented a car this week, so we'd have lots more mobility), packed up the clothing we wore over the past week, and headed out to the laundromat.  Again.  It's amazing how many clothes we go through when we know we have a place nearby to wash them.  It was only one load, so it didn't take long, but I did want to get it out of the way since we have other plans for the weekend and Monday.  After we finished the laundry, we stopped at a store for a few last minute Christmas decorations for the truck, and then headed back to settle in and watch a few episodes of An Idiot Abroad before we went to bed.

Tomorrow we hit the Apple store to have them figure out the problem with the SLOWER-THAN-A-TURTLE-OH-MY-GOD-I'M-GOING-TO-THROW-THIS-OUT-THE-FUCKING-WINDOW wifi and Internet on my iPad.  It's driving me crazy and I can't take another minute.  I read online that it's been an issue for a lot of people who have the new iPad, and that in some instances because they can't fix the issue, they've been giving people brand new iPads.  That's fine with me - IF it works.  I don't want a newer version of this headache.

Well, that's about it.  Bed is calling.  Talk soon, y'all!  (I've been hanging out with a lot of Southerners in this class.  Sometimes you just pick up the twang.)

An Extra Large Bargain

Another laundromat photo to add to my ever-growing collection. Who ever knew I'd see so many laundromats, in so many cities, in so many states? A laundromat in every port, if you will.

I'm kind of a laundry whore.

Just What I Need

It's time to do laundry again. Oh, the joy. I've taken so many photographs of laundromats at this point, that I've given laundry its own category.

Ultima Lavada 9:00 PM

After a great lunch at
Cielito Lindo Restaurant in El Monte, California, I went kicking and screaming to a nearby laundromat to do my bazillion loads of laundry.

They had a new machine there that I hadn't seen before and I had a question, but the attendant didn't speak any English. Good thing doing laundry isn't brain surgery, as I figured it out on my own.

Eddie Hauls Laundry The White Trash Way Friday

Here you will see Eddie with our cart full of laundry at a very brightly lit 24-hour laundromat in Corpus Christi, Texas. Because we couldn't fit the truck in the small laundromat parking lot, we had to park across the street at the Lowe's. And because we had two huge, military seabag sized laundry bags full of laundry to do, Ed hauled it all across the street in one of their shopping carts.

You can imagine how "Queen of White Trash" I felt while I held the door open for him as he wheeled the cart in. The place was a bazillion degrees, so I was not looking forward to doing all that laundry, but since I was wearing the last decent outfit I had, there was no choice.

I loaded five machines and got everything started so I could read my book. Twenty minutes later, the washing machines cycled off. Well, except for one. The digital display said "11", indicating it had eleven minutes left to the cycle. I wondered why that one hadn't finished since they all went in at the same time, but I figure I must have miscalculated and started to put the clothes from the other machines into the dryers. After I unloaded the four machines, I went back to get the other clothes.

The machine was still stuck on 11 and I watched as the water poured in, cycled once to the right, paused, then cycled back to the left. I jiggled the handle, pressed all the buttons, and kicked it, but it didn't move. It just kept rinsing and spinning.

There was an emergency number on the wall to call, but it didn't have the area code listed, so I asked someone in the laundromat. He gave me a number, but it had too many digits. I gave him a puzzled look and then he corrected himself, saying "Oops. That's the zip code. The area code is 613". So I pounched in the number and left a message for "Matt", the guy whose voicemail I got. "Hi. I'm sitting at your laundromat on Williams in Corpus and my clothes are stuck in one of your machines. The rinse cycle has been on for forty minutes now and the digital display hasn't moved. I can't stop it and I can't get the door open. Please call me back at xxx.xxx.xxxx. Thank you."

I waited and waited but never got a call back. I texted Ed, who was in the truck, to come back over because he had to help me get my clothes out of the machine. I had a feeling the guy gave me the wrong area code, and since I hadn't gotten a call back yet, I asked Ed to give me the correct one. He texted back, "361". Great. So the first time, I called some guy to tell him I was sitting in his laundromat watching my trapped clothes spin around in the washing machine. Which okay, is a mistake, but geez, you'd think the guy would at least have called me back to tell me I had the wrong number. Especially since I told him I was sitting there waiting for his call.

I then dialed the correct number and got an answering service who took my information and told me the owner would be over to help me out. So I sat and waited. The guy finally showed up and cut the power to the machine, resetting it so it would go back on and finish the cycle. At this point, my clothes had been rinsing for over an hour. In all of my life, I've never had my clothes get trapped in a washing machine. Guess I can't say that anymore.

As we were folding the clothes and finishing up, Ed and I laughed about the message I left for "Matt" about me sitting in his laundromat, watching my spinning clothes that were being held hostage by his machine. It was very late when we did our laundry, so undoubtebly I woke someone up; I'm sure he was looking at his phone thinking, who the hell is calling me at this hour? I almost called him back when he hadn't responded but you know when you get that feeling that someone gave you the wrong information, so you double check it? Glad I did. I could have left two stupid messages.

Only later when I was able to get on the computer to look it up, did I find out that the area code I called belonged to someone in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Looks like that makes my little blunder international. Pretty funny, eh?

Open 24 Hours

Seated on the bench in front you can see Harold, the 73 year old Jamaican man I met in the laundromat at midnight.

Isn't this a great idea?

The twenty-four hour laundromat, not the seventy-three year old Jamaican.

Laundress

This oil on canvas painting is titled Laundress. It was painted by Edgar Degas, circa 1874. I chose this painting because this is what I will look like today after doing the 57 loads of laundry that is waiting for me. The only difference will be a huge hump on my back. Gee, how come Degas didn't think of that?
