My mother called yesterday to tell me what she called a "funny story".
She was in the grocery store bread section and saw a nice looking older man, with white hair, wearing a t-shirt and jeans walking toward her. He had a smile on his face, happy eyes, and a pleasant demeanor. He was walking with a hop, like a jig, throwing his foot out to the side. Dancing, was the way she put it.
As he came closer he said, "Buy that bread. It's really good."
"Yes, I know." my mother said. He smiled.
"I was noticing how happy you are," my mother said. "Dancing your way into the grocery store."
"I wasn't dancing," he said.
"Oh." she said.
"I just had neck surgery, and now I have all these nuts and bolts in my neck and spine. Like Frankenstein." he said.
"Oh, I'm so sorry. I hope I didn't offend you." my mother said.
"Nah, I'm not offended. Just in pain. They damaged a nerve that goes all the way down my spine and into my leg so now when I walk, my foot involuntarily jumps out to the side." he said.
"So that's where the dance step comes in." my mother said.
"Yep. And to not lose my balance, I kinda throw my hip out." he said.
"Well, it looks like you're dancing and very happy."
"Oh, I'm happy. In pain all the time, but happy." he said.
And that is your lesson for the day. You're welcome.
