Roadstar Wall Of Fame

Flashback to our friend Marlaina pointing to Ed's name on the Roadstar Wall of Fame.

The plaque above the list of names says:

This wall is dedicated to the men and women of Landstar who have devoted their lives to setting and maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism in the transportation industry.

It is through the efforts of these fine people that Landstar continues to provide the safest, highest quality, most innovative transportation solutions in America.

Roadstars, we salute you!

Not only do I salute my husband (not literally), but I am so proud of him.  Not just for achieving the highest award the company we are leased to bestows upon drivers, but proud of him for the daily level of safety he maintains when we are on the road.

Way to go, Eddie!

The Waiting Game

Here we are, waiting in the driver's lounge at the Volvo dealership in Utah for a repair to be done on our truck.  It had fairly comfortable chairs, clean bathrooms, a crappy vending machine, and an even crappier coffee station. And we were there for TEN hours.  TEN!

The repair is finally done and we're back on the road but holy moly.  The reason it took so long is because they put the part in, it didn't work, and they had to take it out and do it all over again.  Sheesh!

What's next?

Researching The Best Wines While Buying Tires

We are sitting in a dirty tire shop in Utah waiting for them to put new tires on the truck and do an alignment.  There are only four chairs - not super comfortable - and a dirty bathroom, but they do have a few things going for them.

There are two vending machines (which I’m not partaking in, but which are stocked with good snacks), a Keurig machine with some delicious flavored coffee choices, and a nice ice and filtered water machine.

But what surprises me most is the magazine selection.  In addition to Guns & Ammo and Ratchet & Wrench magazines, they also have Essence and Wine Spectator.

Fancy.

Custom Design

It's not the prettiest picture, but it is photographic evidence of my sewing skills.

Ed came to me with a problem - deteriorating airbags.

The airbags on our sleeper, like all airbags, are made of rubber.  We have five airbags on the back of our sleeper that you can see here - three in the middle, one on each side.  Over time, with exposure to the environment, road schmutz, chemicals, and sunshine, the rubber deteriorates and the airbags need to be replaced.

What Ed wanted, was a way to shield the airbag from these destructive elements.  He gave me the tarping material he wanted used and asked if I could sew a cover.

Well, I did.  With the measurement of the airbag Ed gave me, I created a little jacket for each airbag.  It was a very simple sewing project - I pleated the material all the way around to create a curved sheath that would hug the airbags, and closed each one with a wide piece of velcro so they'd be easy to remove if needed.

Ed loves them!  And they work.

I can now check this project off my to-do list!

Bound By The Road

Photo courtesy of Bound By The Cloak website

I was recently asked to be interviewed for a podcast called Bound By The Cloak

Chandi Guntapalli contacted me because she and her co-host,  Zoe Marshall, wanted to get the perspective of a woman truck driver and tell the story about what we experienced on the road as a truck driver.

I love talking about my job and sharing what happens in my daily life on the road.  Many people seem interested in this profession and don't always know what our days are like.  So Chandi and Zoey asked the questions they were interested in and I answered!

You can listen to my episode HERE.

Enjoy!

A Roadstar Shows How Business Casual Is Done

It's really official now.  We have a Roadstar in the family.

Last month, at an awards banquet in Orlando, Florida, Ed was handed his Roadstar award, on stage, in a room full of his peers.  He was smiling from ear-to-ear.

At the 3-day event, there were past inductees in addition to the new inductees who were there to be recognized at the Saturday night awards ceremony banquet.

On the first day of the event, at check-in, Ed received his name tag with ribbons indicating his past status as a one million miler, and the new inductee ribbon for the Roadstar award he'd be receiving.

Landstar flew us from Tucson to Orlando and put us up in the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort for the three days of the event.  They fed us (a LOT), entertained us with a special appearance by Jamie Clarke, acclaimed adventurer, explorer, author, and entrepreneur, and tried to kill us by giving us free passes to ICON Park, an "entertainment destination".

I joke about them trying to kill us.  I only say that because it was nine-billion degrees with 152% humidity - not the most ideal conditions for a day at an outside entertainment destination.

We went on The Wheel (their giant 400-foot Ferris wheel), visited Madame Tussaud's wax museum, and then popped into the Sea Life Aquarium.
Ed with Johnny Depp at the wax museum

What I found to be a VERY pleasant surprise was that the Ferris wheel's gondola car was not only air-conditioned, but it had a digital jukebox of sorts where you could choose your own music to serenade you during the 20-minute ride.  Nice, but I was still happy to get into an air-conditioned Uber to take me back to the air-conditioned resort.

The resort was TREMENDOUS. A 255-acre property with 1,501 guestrooms.  The walk from our room to the conference rooms was at least one-half of a mile.  Between meals and meetings, we made that hike several times a day.  The resort actually rents scooters for people to get around.  I wish I had gotten one of those.  I was envious every time someone zipped past me.

This photo is from the resort website showing two of the four swimming pools on the property.  We spent one of our days lounging by the pool with fruity drinks.  I haven't been in a pool in ages - it was so relaxing.  I think the
piña colada might have had something to do with that.
They did an eighties-themed dinner for the first night we were there and many of the attendees - including our CEO and his wife - dressed up in their best eighties garb.  He was sporting parachute pants and high-top sneakers and she looked like a typical Jersey girl in her Madonna-esque outfit complete with fishnet stockings.  The music was great - so many songs I hadn't heard in years.  Everyone had a lot of fun.

Before the event, they asked all the Roadstars to wear the jacket they were given and a shirt of their choice to take their headshots.  I put Ed in his white shirt and figured we'd put the tie and jacket on, then he'd just switch out of that and just wear the shirt and shorts to the meeting.  But we didn't have time to go back to the room to change so Ed wound up wearing his shirt and tie, along with his shorts and flip-flops to the Roadstar Welcome meeting.

He was a hit!  Gregg Nelson, the Vice President of Operations at Landstar, called Ed out at the meeting and made a big fuss about how he was dressed.  "Now that's how you dress for a meeting!"

He asked Ed to stand up and then said, "That's Resort Casual."  That was the first of many comments Ed got as he walked the halls.  One guy said, "Business on top, party on bottom, huh?"  and Ed replied, "It's called a Business Mullet."

Whatever it was called, I thought he looked very handsome.
Overall, we had a really nice weekend.  We added a day on either side of the three days the company paid for and we upgraded our flight to First Class so we could comfortably travel from Arizona to Florida.  It was a nice little perk.

Now we're home trying to stay out of the blazing hot summer heat of Tucson.  It hasn't been easy since we're doing a lot of caretaking for our parents lately.  Which, of course, requires us to leave the house.

A Hail Mary, Lucky Horseshoes, And Some Really Good Trip Planning Are All That's Needed

Parking is a serious problem for truckers.  And it has been for years.  People want the items trucks bring, but they don't seem to want us parking anywhere near them.  NIMBYs, the whole lot of them.

Even when we pre-plan our trip and have an idea where we’ll be stopping for the night, it doesn’t always work out. I’m the night driver of our team. And for some reason, I always seem to get lucky. My friend claims I have a golden horseshoe up my ass. Which, looking at the arc of my life, may be very, very true.  But not everyone has one.

That doesn’t mean I haven’t run into snags. Sometimes you plan to shut down at a particular truck stop for the night but you get there and it’s full. Sometimes you know there’s a rest area coming up but you get there and it’s closed. These are real-life everyday problems. I always leave myself extra time and never run my clock out. You don't even know the panic that sets in when you're watching your time run out and you're still driving to try to find a spot. One time I literally coasted into a parking lot with almost no time to spare.  Those were a few white-knuckle seconds, let me tell you.

As you can see in the photo - taken on Interstate-95 Northbound in St. Augustine, Florida - the “No Parking” signs are abundant. There must have been 40 signs there, on the outbound ramp of the rest area. The company we are leased to does not allow parking on ramps so we never have and never will do it, but lots of companies let their drivers park wherever they can find a spot.  When you see trucks parked on the shoulder of the highway, or on the ramps of exits or rest areas, you can bet your last dollar it's because they can't find an appropriate or safe place to park.

The 2019 Jason’s Law Report found that 98% of truck drivers regularly experience problems finding safe parking.  The report is named after Jason Rivenburg, a driver who was robbed and murdered when he parked in an abandoned gas station in South Carolina.  He was the father of a two-year-old at the time, and his wife gave birth to twins just thirteen days after he was killed.  An absolute tragedy.

It's a problem everywhere - in the northeast, California (which I think is the very worst), Atlanta, Chicago, most large cities.  But even in places where we have to pick up and deliver.  Some of these companies, which have plenty of parking at their facilities, don't even allow us to park there when waiting to load or unload.  They want their freight, they want it ASAP, yet they make things difficult for the drivers.

In addition to the lack of parking, I personally have a problem with other vehicles using truck parking spots - like RVs, cars towing little trailers. Or a pickup truck that shouldn't be in the truck parking area at all.  I think they should all go to Walmart parking lots, where they are allowed and most often, we aren’t. We have to adhere to federally mandated Hours of Service. They don’t. When our time is up, it’s up. We need that spot. We are the ones who need safe, secure, available parking.

Truckers will never stop talking about the issues we face on a daily basis.  I just hope someone, somewhere, is listening.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

UPDATE:  This week, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg discussed the lack of safe truck parking.  I like Buttigieg.  And I'll like him even more if he's actually the one who finally does something about the parking situation.  Knowing who and what he's up against, I won't hold my breath.

But I will keep my butt cheeks squeezed tight - there's no way I'm letting that golden horseshoe slip out.

Crème De La Crème

Earlier this year we got a phone call from Landstar Corporate offices asking to speak to Ed.  It sounded serious so we both sat there waiting to hear alarming news.  It turned out to not be alarming at all, but it was unexpected. After they told us why they were calling, they asked us to keep the news to ourselves until the company made their formal announcement.  They have now released the information so we are able to share it with anyone who's interested in listening - worldwide, as it turns out since this blog reaches as far as the internet will take it.

They were calling to let Ed know that he had been chosen to receive Landstar's most prestigious safety award:

The Landstar Roadstar

He is one of 14 receiving the award this year, and one of only 150 in the company, which leases over 10,000 drivers.

In order to be eligible for the Roadstar award, drivers have to meet certain criteria.  First, you need to have logged, at minimum, one million safe driving miles.  The means you've had to have driven one million consecutive miles without hitting anything.  It's harder than you think, considering the motoring public these days.  Ed has actually driven about 2.5 million miles in his career, 1.4 of them with Landstar.

Second, drivers must have a high level of productivity and the ability to provide top-notch customer service. Ed has done both.

With that in the bag, there's one more thing that puts you on track to receive a Roadstar award....

A nomination.

Someone has to nominate you.  They have to tell Landstar that you are a good fit for their highest award.  We don't know who submitted Ed's name, but someone out there believes he deserves this honor.

In addition to being a recipient of this award and being "crowned" in the company of your peers at a lavish awards banquet that takes place at a three-day company paid-for event at a resort somewhere in the southeast (it's a different place every year), the Roadstar also gets the navy blue blazer Ed is wearing in the photo (that most drivers wear at the yearly banquets to show off their status as Roadstars), a Roadstar belt buckle, a Roadstar logo for your truck (the one you see is temporary, we are having a more professional vinyl one made), and to top it all off, the best perk of all, are the complimentary license plates they pay for every year for the rest of the time the driver is leased on with the company.

That's a $1,700.00 bonus each and every year!

Apparently, that's a big deal for drivers.  Kinda reminds me of the time I won two steer tires at a raffle (valued at approximately $800 each) and the room went crazy with oohs and ahhs.  I was thinking, what the hell am I going to do with two steer tires??  But boy, the real truckers in the room thought I hit the lottery.

I am very proud of my husband for being the recipient of this award.  It was a goal of his to reach this status at Landstar, and he did it!  He is also feeling very proud and accomplished.  At 46 years old, with 25 years in this business, he's exceeded so many of his career goals and he just keeps going.  He's not just a Roadstar, he's a regular star!!

Keep going, baby!  I'm thrilled to be married to the cream of the crop!

Room For Waiting

When we go to shipping ports around the country, some of them do not allow passengers.  Even if that passenger is the other driver.  It's crazy.  Especially since, in our case as with other people, we hold a TWIC card for the specific purpose of proving you've had a background check and passed the clearance checks required to actually enter the ports.

Once, many years ago in New Jersey, the security people at the port check-in booth threatened to call the police if I didn't get out of the truck and wait outside the port.  And they meant OUTSIDE.  I sat on a shitty concrete wall in a dusty parking area.  A woman.  Alone.  In a port in New Jersey.  I was pissed and we complained.  After we delivered the container, they called us into the office and the manager of the facility personally apologized to me.

And that's when I learned to hide in the truck for any future visits to ports.

The most recent port we visited was the Norfolk International Terminals in Virginia.  We had been there before and they let me in without an issue.  I had a TWIC card and they allowed me entry.  But this time, even though I explained that I wasn't a passenger, I was a driver, and I showed them my TWIC, I still had to wait.  For TWO hours, while Ed went in and retrieved the container.

I can't really complain though, as the facility was very nice.  I was the only one there, so it was quiet, and there were at least 40 feet of benches on either side of the room - I could have spread out and napped if I was inclined.  They had a bathroom (clean!), vending machines, air conditioning, accessible power outlets for my phone charging cord, and very friendly staff.

I sat and read the news, played Words With Friends, and practiced my Italian on the DuoLingo app.  The time flew by.

But as nice as it was, I still think I'm going to go back to being a stowaway.  I'd rather nap in my own bed, eat my own snacks, and pee in my own bathroom.

Shhhhh....don't tell anyone.
