Le Petit Rocher

The Junction Bridge spanning the Arkansas River in Little Rock, Arkansas and the "little rock" at the base of it.

The name on the rock is spelled Bernard, but the explorer who was the "first to record the existence of a large rocky bluff on the north bank of the Arkansas River" was Jean-Baptiste Bénard de La Harpe, and that's who they're talking about.

The smaller rock, just upstream from the large rocky bluff, was in an area where it was possible to ford the river.  and that's where the settlement of Little Rock was developed.

El Font de Santa Ana is Barcelona's oldest fountain, built in 1356.  This fountain can be found on Carrer de la Cucurulla in the Ciutat Vella (Old City).

¡Salud!

The Stone Quarry

This is the courtyard area at Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera, in Barcelona, Spain.

La Pedrera was built between 1906 and 1912 and was the last private residence designed by architect Antoni Gaudí.

We saw three Gaudí designed buildings in Barcelona -  La Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, and this place.  They were all fantastic in their own way with so many amazing elements in each one, like this beautiful door.

From top to bottom, this place was spectacular.  A must-see if you visit Barcelona.

Pleasing To The Eye

 ss

This is our neighbor's house. It's the prettiest house on our cul-de-sac.  He's worked on this property for over twenty years, doing all the work himself.  The decorative stone was spread by him and his two boys, the front sloping rocks were placed by hand, and the cacti were chosen specifically for the spots they are in and meticulously cared for so they always look great.  Our yard looks like the surface of Mars in comparison.

His backyard is even more amazing.  He used every inch of his acreage and has walking paths and seating areas all throughout the landscaping.  The backyard is multi-tiered, with a clay chiminea, a red metal Welsh dragon, strategically placed lighting - both solar and wired, and interesting "art" everywhere.  I covet his yard.

I will someday have a yard worthy of photographing but I can tell you right now I won't be doing any of the work myself.  I would rather find a photo on the internet of something I like, show it to a person who can do it, and then pay them to complete the work.

Until then, I'll drive by this house and smile.  And when we're invited over to have a drink and watch the setting sun turn the mountain red, I will go and know that someday, I'll be doing the same in my backyard.

Navigating The Gulf Islands

We took a quick 24-hour trip to Victoria, British Columbia this week, and on our way back to the States, took a different ferry than the one we usually use.

This ferry, rather than taking us to Port Angeles, Washington, leaves from Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, snakes through the Gulf Islands, and winds up at the Seaspan Tilbury Island terminal in Delta, British Columbia.

We were parked on the front of the ferry, on the deck open to the elements, which allowed us to sit in the cab of the truck, giving us an unobstructed view during the trip. The scenery of British Columbia is always majestic, and on this day, although it was shrouded in mist since it was overcast and a little drizzly, it was still beautiful. We even saw a group of sea lions sprawled on the shore, nestled beneath a small red-and-white-striped lighthouse - we heard their barking as we sailed by.

This ferry crossing was longer than the other one, but I liked being on the open deck and seeing the scenery. It's definitely something I look forward to doing again.

So Nice, I Posted Twice

I posted a photo of Civita di Bagnoregio, Italy yesterday and decided to post another one today because I loved this little village.

Perched on a hilltop, it's known as "The Dying Town".  The only way to access it is to walk up a verrrry long path to the main entrance to the village.  There are no motorized vehicles allowed.

It's so picturesque.  I can't wait to go back!

I Drew A Forest

I made this drawing on one of my drawing apps.  I was sitting in the car, up on Mt. Lemmon, waiting for Ed.  I drew the trees I saw in front of me.  It's about as close to a forest as I'd like to be.

That said, I think I might have a backup plan in case trucking doesn't work out.  You'd pay money for this, right?  LOL

Traditionally Irish

I don't know where I took this photo but clearly, it's a patch of weeds somewhere.  But, there's a clover.

Sadly, not a four-leaf clover.  It's a White Clover (Trifolium Repens). The genus name, Trifolium, derives from the Latin tres, "three", and folium, "leaf", so called from the characteristic form of the leaf, which almost always has three leaflets (trifoliolate); hence the popular name "trefoil".

It's also known as a Shamrock.  So it's close enough for a St. Patrick's Day post.

White Clover symbolizes hope, faith, love, and good fortune.  Four-leaf clovers represent good luck in Britain and the United States because it is considered a plant only grown in the Garden of Eden.  In some countries, the playing cards suit of clubs represents the lucky white clover.

I found this information on the wonderful World Wide Web:

The word shamrock comes from the Gaelic word Seamrog, meaning “little clover”.  Clover is the commonly used name for any number of plants belonging to the genus Trifolium, meaning “having three leaves.” Even among botanists, there is some disagreement on what species is the “true” shamrock, but most agree that the White Clover is probably the original shamrock of Irish symbolic heritage. While trying to convert the Irish into Christians, St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the holy trinity with each leaf representing the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The three leaves of a shamrock are also said to stand for faith, hope, and love. A fourth leaf is where we get the luck from. The four-leafed clover, or “lucky clover”, is an uncommon variation of the three-leafed clover, and is widely considered to be a symbol of good luck. Because they are a mutation, they are rare, and not found in the same abundance as the shamrock, and thus, considered lucky.

The traditional Irish symbol of a shamrock does not include the fourth leaf.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!

PS:  Did you know St. Patrick was Italian?
