The Alien Cowboy Capital Of The World

 

We spent last weekend in the Dallas area visiting with Ed's family.  While we were there, we took a ride down to Stephenville to visit his mom's gravesite and see the new headstone that had been installed since we were there for the funeral in December 2022.

We went for lunch at The Purple Goat and drove around a bit since the last time we were there, we didn't really have any time to see the town.  Ed's mother was born in Stephenville.  She lived here in her youth, after she got married, and during the early years of raising her children. 

Here's a picture of the Erath County Courthouse in the middle of downtown.  It was built in 1891 and is constructed with local white limestone and red Pecos sandstone.

And here's a photo of College Street, also downtown.

Overall, it's a cute little town and a pretty area.  The drive from the Metroplex was really nice.  Very scenic.  A lot of ranches, animals, and lush greenery. The area grew after it became an agricultural and livestock center.  It was also known for coal mining.  Ranching must still be the industry in the area because there's not much else in the way of businesses.  

So, we visited the cemetery where Ed's mom is and then drove around the town she called home.  It was a lovely day.

Tell Me Where You Are Without Telling Me Where You Are

I've never seen a state that displays its flag more than Texas.  They're everywhere.  On flagpoles in every city, on front lawns, on the side of barns, on vehicle antennas, on t-shirts, belt buckles, and coffee mugs.  And at car dealerships, like in the photo.

There is no mistaking where you are when driving through Texas. They are unapologetically loyal to that flag.  Moreso, I think, than even the American flag.  

I've read that the Texas state flag is the best-selling of all 50 states.  It's not a surprise.

You simply cannot escape it.

Prime Parking

My seat at the dinette table in the sleeper berth of the truck faces forward, with my view being whatever is in front of the nose of the cab.  

This is the view I see when we're parked on Port Townsend Bay in Port Hadlock-Irondale, Washington.  We face the bay and can see Mount Townsend, part of the Olympic Mountain Range, in the distance.

The sun sparkles off the water most of the day, we see sailboats and fishing boats pass by, and watch birds on the shore as the tides go in and out. 

THIS is prime parking.

Pitch And Roll On May Long Weekend

 

The ferry ride from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada to Port Angeles, Washington, United States was rougher than usual.  It was very windy and quite chilly when we left and once we got out of the harbor into the open water, the waves made for a rocky ride.

We were tossed from side to side for quite a while, with people darting back and forth as they zig-zagged through the boat.  I was worried that the items in our truck parked below deck were being strewn about, but when we got back to it, everything was still in place.

We hit land around 9:00 in the evening - the crossing is only an hour and a half - so we didn't have to endure the roll for too long.

I'm disappointed we didn't get to stay longer this visit and enjoy the May Long Weekend festivities that are planned in honor of Queen Victoria.  We're missing a parade!
