Reading Time

We did another Baltimore-Seattle run this weekend, delivering this morning. It's 2,889 miles and should take about fifty hours. We usually do it in just about that, allowing some extra time for fuel stops, pee breaks, mental breakdowns, etc. This last trip was a bit of a bear for me. I was tired every minute of the day; even the minutes I was sleeping. And it seemed when it was my turn to sleep, the roads grew potholes and I was suddenly afflicted with restless leg syndrome. I couldn't quiet my mind or my body.

The good part about the trip was that I finished listening to
The Blood of Flowers, a beautifully written book, with vivid descriptions of a place that made me want to book the next flight to Iran. The book was narrated by Iranian-American actress Shohreh Aghdashloo. Her voice is hypnotically gorgeous.

In fact, I ordered another book called Inside The Kingdom, just because she also narrated that. Her voice was so soothing and so perfect for the story, set in seventeenth century Persia. You can listen to her read an excerpt to the book HERE and on that same page, you can also hear her do a short interview with the author, which I found to be very interesting.

The audiobooks are really helping with the cross-country trips and I'm finding it easier to pay attention, whereas it used to be that an audiobook was just reason for my mind to wander. Maybe to solve the problem of not being able to settle down and sleep, I should listen to a few nursery rhymes and bedtime stories when I hit the sack; the audio version of counting sheep.

I have a few more books in my "library" that are waiting to be listened to, and a new one downloading as I type this. The one I'm really looking forward to is A Thousand Splendid Suns. I loved The Kite Runner, by the same author, so this should be a real treat having it read to me. I'll let you know what I think.

I do the same thing you were doing. My mind starts to wander and my legs jerk. Only after I take 2-4 ibuprophen ( I know it's misspelled) that my body will relax enough to go to sleep. You might want to try it.
