Love, Peace, And Soooouuulll

I grew up watching Soul Train. Every Saturday at noon, you could find me planted in front of the television with my eyes glued to the screen. Not just sitting either, I would be copying every move I could, watching every girl on the screen and trying to move my body like they did. I loved everything about it - the host, the artists, the music, the dancers - I wanted to be a Soul Train dancer. And nothing could tear me away from the line dance at the end of the show. It was the crowning glory of the hour.

I loved R & B music (still do) and loved seeing the artists perform live, especially new ones. I bought many a cassette tape because I saw a singer or group on Soul Train. When I moved to Arizona, where no one listened to R & B, Soul Train was the perfect way to get my fix, even if it was only weekly.

I was surprised to hear today that Don Cornelius died - according to reports, he committed suicide, which makes the news even sadder. The New York Times did a nice article about him and his contribution to the sound and promotion of black artists, as the host of a show he dubbed the "hippest trip in America".
