It Doesn't Take Much To Show A Customer You Appreciate Them

Today we stopped by a Wegmans in Maryland to pick up a few things before we headed down South to the land of the Piggly Wiggly.

Fish, chicken, fresh mozzarella, fruits, and veggies.  You may remember how much I love this store.  I wrote about it here and here and here.

After we checked out, Ed made a comment to me about their shopper's club card.  A shopper's club card??  Why didn't I know they had a shopper's club card?  How is that possible??  My friend, Marlaina, knew about the card.  But then, she would.  She has a collection of them from all over the country, and informed me the Wegmans card was one of her first.

I marched back into the store, took my receipts to the customer service desk and asked the woman if anything I bought would have been discounted with the card and if so, can I sign up for one?  Nothing I bought was eligible for the discount, so I just signed up for the card.

After she handed me the card, she told me they had a free gift for me just for signing up.  She walked away and came back with a reusable shopping bag.  I was thrilled.  I'm a total bag whore (reusable and otherwise).  I have one from Italy that's four years old.  I have one from Nordstrom that I got with a recent purchase.  I have another from my mother's health care provider.  I just love them.  They're lightweight, perfect for toting things, and fairly strong.  The Italy one has been used extensively and doesn't show any signs of wear.  Not bad for a bag that's made of what, plastic?

But that wasn't even the best part.  Inside were two other gifts.  The Wegmans Menu Magazine (a $4.99 value) which I was eyeing before I checked out, and a bottle of Wegmans Garlic and Herb Basting Oil (a $6.49 value).  With the bag, that makes three things I'll actually use.  Way to keep your customers happy, Wegmans!

Freightliner should take a page out of their book.

Salena, I've written to you previously, I live just up the road from Wegman's organic farm on Canandaigua Lake. Let me share a story about Wegman's customer service...while shopping at Wegman's on a Saturday morning with my 9 year old daughter a few weeks ago, they were sampling the new crop of cherries and offered us a a taste, my daughter politely declined and mentioned she preferred strawberries. We moved on. A few minutes later while at the fish counter, the young woman who was sampling the cherries tracked us down and handed us a bowl of sliced strawberries, fork, napkin and a huge smile! THAT is customer service. I also shared with my daughter the picture you posted of the ‘stained glass street’ guess what we’ll be looking for…keep up the great posts…love ‘em!

Yes, I remember you commenting in the past! And I remember being jealous that you live not only near a Wegmans, but near a Wegmans farm!! LOL

What a great shopping story. It's exactly that kind of action that solidifies a great shopping experience. And what did it cost them - a paper plate and a few strawberries? Invaluable! And smart.

I do love that store! Thanks for sharing the 'stained glass street' post, thanks for reading, and most of all, thanks for commenting!!

Have a great weekend!
