Award Winning Plan

My plan for the day:

Sleep.

Eat.

Watch The Oscars.

I haven't seen all the movies, so I'll be guessing who I think will win.  The movies I have seen are Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club and Gravity.  I'd like to say that I feel fairly confident that Gravity will win nothing.  If they do, I'll be in shock.  And I'm also pretty confident Jared Leto will win Best Supporting Actor - he was very good.  The rest are up in the air.

American Hustle
Captain Phillips
Dallas Buyers Club
Gravity

12 Years a Slave

I don't think Up in The Air is up for any Oscars this year-just teasing! We don't get to see the Oscar ceremony because we refuse to give Rupert Murdoch any money for the privilegege of doing so. How was Ellen-was she funny? Dallas Buyers Club hasn't gotten around to this part of the world yet. We just had our Film Festival here in Keswick-the 15th, amazing really in a town of just 5,000 people. I managed to see 13 films altogether. http://www.keswickfilmclub.org/kff/programme.php

Salena: wish I'd known you were Oscar watching! Would have e-chatted with you. Watched every moment.

I saw all the nominated movies except Wolf of Wall Street. (Will catch that one in second run.)

Know you were not a Gravity fan. I saw it in 3D after you did; think it deserves its technical awards and not surprised Cuaron got Best Director.

Most happy 12 Years got Best Picture, because it needed the recognition. Slavery is our original sin, and we're barely dealing with it honestly even 150 years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Was rooting most for McConaughey and Leto for Dallas Buyers Club, which was probably one of my top 3 movies for 2013. They were superb.

If you've not seen Nebraska, do so. It's quietly charming and very, very funny with the extended family scenes. Best use of B&W cinematography and memorable character actors (some of them non-professional). Time and tide, in a landlocked state.

Had no idea how to vote in Best Actress. Didn't see Blue Jasmine; hope it's back in theatres.

Just didn't want Meryl Streep to get BA, because she's been greatly honored already and her character looked noxious. (Didn't see the flick. Too close to home!!) Streep's a good sport, though, and an asset to anything she attends or is involved in.

Could say the same about you!!

American Hustle: entertaining flick, but not sad it was shut out.

Although Christian Bale was almost as good as McConaughey. Jeremy Renner was terrific as the mayor; didn't recognize him in character.

All the acting was good, but I was glad to see actors in other, less cynical roles take the honors this year. (You'll notice Wolf of Wall Street went winless, maybe for the same reason.)

And I was rooting against Hustle in the costume design category. Designer nailed the 70s vibe -- excellent fabrics and clothing EXCEPT I winced at the lowcut daytime outfits poor Amy Adams was stuck with.

They worked against the story for me. You are going to give a classy British woman your money when she looks like a call girl who's along for the ride?

The plunging necklines in office and daytime scenes were an inauthentic touch. About the only one, but fatal. For this viewer.

And I love Jennifer Lawrence, but give someone else the Oscar this year. Yea Lupita! Charming person.

My in laws are from a small town in nebraska and they commented that they felt like they knew everyone in the movie. As for black and white...it's not too far from what the landscape looks like right now. I know, I live there. Everything is sepia toned this time of year.

Hi Jill. As you no doubt know, director Alexander Payne is from Omaha. He knows the stark Nebraska landscape well.

All his movies are set in Nebraska; at least, most of them. (Thinking About Schmidt with the rolling RV and Kathy Bates in the hot tub.)

I like movies with a sense of place.

MICK: Very funny. Why don't you get to see the Oscars? It doesn't play on any network? What about the internet? Ellen was okay - I like her, so I thought she was funny, but it wasn't great. Other hosts were funnier - like Billy Crystal. I'd love to see Ricky Gervais host. Love him.

BELLEDOG: I didn't know we'd be watching. But because of the weather, we had to sit and let the snow and ice storm pass, so we got lucky.

I agree with Gravity winning the other awards, but Sandra Bullock being nominated? Nah. Can't wait to see 12 Years - I have the book on my Kindle. Nebraska is a movie I'd like to see too. And although I like Meryl Streep, I feel the same way - let others get the honors. American Hustle didn't interest me too much, I'll see it on DVD. And Wolf of Wall Street I'd like to see because of DiCaprio.

JILL: I love hearing this - that your in-laws felt like they knew everyone in the movie! And yes, the landscape this time of year is a little bleak. But I still like it - winter, that is. :) And I agree with BELLEDOG, about movies with a sense of place, I like that too. Thanks for commenting!

No, Murdochs Sky television company has the rights to the Oscars here. He makes sure it isn't on free to air tv-I'll see clips on youtube later on. As for presenters, I don't think there's anyone funnier at the moment than Tina Fey and Amy Poehler-Parks and Recreation is our favorite show right now. And speaking of funny ladies, Ruby Wax is coming to our town next week-so excited!
