Historical Central Square

The photo above shows The Frauenkirche, a 14th-century Gothic church (built 1352-1361) which stands on the east side of the Hauptmarkt (central square) in Nuremberg, Germany.

Every year they hold the Nürnberger Christkindlesmarkt here.  It's one of the largest Christmas markets in Germany and one of the most famous in the world, drawing 2.4 million visitors per year in a less-than-4-week period.

During World War II, Nuremberg (Nürnberg in German) was bombed 59 times by the Allied Forces. The heaviest sustained aerial attack was on January 2, 1945, when 90% of the city center was destroyed in one hour. In that hour, 1,800 residents were killed and approximately 100,000 were displaced. Ultimately, the air raids killed an estimated 6,000 people.
