Recipe For American Nostalgia

"Eat in diners, ride trains, live in a walkable community."

Those are the words on the menu flap of the Eveready Diner in Brewster, New York - their recipe for American nostalgia.

I'm all for the "eat in diners" part.

Ed and found this diner because we were starving and needed somewhere immediately.  And it happened to be just off Interstate-84, on the edge of a parking lot that had room for a truck.

Apparently they have two locations - this one in Brewster, and another in Hyde Park.  The Hyde Park one was featured on the Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives show.  We didn't know this though, when we made our decision.

We did know it was a Zagat rated diner.  Rated by Zagat??  It had to be good, and likely better than the restaurant and the truck stop.  So we checked out the parking situation on Google Earth, saw that they indeed had enough room for a truck, and headed in that direction.

It was right off the exit, easy maneuvering for a truck, and plenty of parking.  The place was busy, but there wasn't a wait for a table and the first thing that we saw when we walked in was the cake and pie display.

And then we sat down and took a look at the menu.  What glorious choices!!  I decided on a French Dip sandwich - which was amazing, served on bread that they make there on the premises - served with a side of au jus (which was DELICIOUS!) and crispy fries.

Ed had this:

A chicken pot pie so delicious, the chicken itself would eat it.  As you can see, the serving was enormous - we took half of it home - but what you can't see is how delicate and flavorul the sauce was.  It was one of the best, deconstructed pot pies I've ever had.

This place is definitely on my list for a return visit, and because it's right off the interstate with truck parking, it gets bumped up even higher on the list.

Oh - and in closing, we took a piece of Tiramisu home because we had no room after dinner to stuff it into our gullets.  It was spectacular.

Next up...finding a train to ride.

And the coffee cup the statue is holding says "Ed". C'mon! Hooray for diners!
