Not A Pear

This is a shot of the prickly pear cactus growing in my front yard.  The entire plant is quite large - about six feet in diameter - and I was surprised to see so much fruit on it, usually, the animals get to the fruit before I can get a decent picture.

Prickly pear cactus has several health benefits, in addition to being made into jellies and candies, which can be found all over this area.

Someone visiting usually winds up going home with a jar of jelly or a prickly pear lollipop for their kids.

There are a lot of recipes out there to make your own jams or jellies, but in the forty years I've lived here I can't say I've been too inclined to do it myself.  The idea of picking out all the little spines and prickly parts is a little too labor-intensive for me.
