Reaching The Boiling Point

Today Ed and MacG went for a ride that underscored my thought that it's just too damn hot to be out on a motorcycle.  Seriously, I don't know how they do it.  They started early, leaving by six, but it doesn't take long for it to heat up.  By eight, it's usually already in the 80s.

They rode for a while when Ed realized he needed to fill the tank.  It was 113 degrees by this point, so the guys took a break and went for lunch.  When they came out of the restaurant, they heard a hissing noise coming from the gas cap.

When Ed opened the cap, a geyser of fuel shot straight up into the air, spraying gas on Ed's gloves and part of his clothing.  He quickly replaced the cap and stepped back from the bike.  When he went to wash the fuel off of him, MacG stood by laughing.  You know, like a guy.

They surmised the combination of the heat and the black gas tank sitting in the sun caused the fuel to expand and essentially create a pressure cooker environment which, like the cap on a radiator, caused a liquid explosion when the pressure was released.

When they slowly removed the cap again, they heard gurgling.  They looked inside the tank and saw what you'll see in the video above - the fuel, at a rolling boil.

Boiling fuel.  You do know liquid has to be 212 degrees to boil.

What the everloving hell??
