Leaving Las Vegas And Bypassing That Damn Dam

Approaching Arizona after crossing the Hoover Dam bypass bridge.

Commercial trucks are not allowed to cross Hoover Dam, so this bridge - which was constructed a quarter of a mile downstream from the dam - allows us to cross the Colorado River without having to go thirty miles out of route to get to Kingman.

Unfortunately, you can't really see the dam from the bridge because of the high barriers.  If you're in a car, make sure to take the damn route.  It's quite an interesting sight.

Are big trucks too heavy for the dam? Or is it the vibration they cause?

Hi Gil!

The dam has been closed to big trucks since 9/11. Prior to that, we always crossed over the dam.
