Slower Moving Than A Sloth

This is the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska.  This is the closest we could get to the glacier.  It was more impressive in person than in this photo, even though we only see a small section of it.  That chunk of blue ice you can see was so vibrant!

Glaciers are pretty amazing.  I didn't know much about them until I did a little Googling about this one.  A glacier is a large, slow-moving mass of ice, snow, rock, sediment, and sometimes liquid water that moves down a slope due to gravity.

Alaska has approximately 27,000 glaciers.

The Mendenhall Glacier has retreated 1.75 miles since 1929, and over 2.5 miles since 1500.

Glaciers cover about 10% of the Earth's land surface and glacial ice is the largest reservoir of freshwater on Earth, holding about 695 of the world's freshwater with ice sheets!
