Squeezed By Guilt

A while back, Ed bought the Aerobie AeroPress Coffee Maker for the truck.  It's like a French press only easier, and he loves it!  He uses it for regular coffee and espresso.  It makes a really good cup of coffee and it's extremely portable - we can take it into a hotel room, or even use it at the house when we're home - and perfect for the truck because it's small enough to tuck just about anywhere.  In a place that's short on space, this is exactly what you need.

When referring to the finished product, Ed and I call it "squeeze", because that's actually how the coffee is made...by squeeeezing the water through the filter to make the coffee.  So when he wants coffee, and he wants it pressed and not brewed, he says "squeeze".  No clarification needed.

Tonight while I was boiling some hot water for tea he said to me in a singsong voice, "I see you're making a beverage."

"Yeah, I'm going to have some tea.  Want some?" I said.

"No," he said.  "But I'll have some squeeze."

Ugh.  I mean, the AeroPress is easy and all, but there's a little process to it.  Get out the coffee, put the filter in the bottom of the AeroPress, set the AeroPress on the mug, measure out a scoop of coffee grinds, dump it in, fill it with water, insert plunger, and press.  Squeeze all of the water out and watch coffee magically appear in your mug.

It's not hard, really, but it does take longer than just throwing a tea bag in a mug and pouring hot water over it, and after I'm done, I have to rinse the pieces.  At night when I want a hot beverage, and maybe a cookie or some Jell-o, I don't want to actually be making anything. I want to boil, pour, and drink.

So I sighed in annoyance and said, "Can't you just have tea?"

Ed replied with a scathing one-liner.

"Pretend I'm Mac Gee."

Snap!  He just tried to guilt me into making him coffee by invoking the name of Marlaina's husband!

It's a running joke around here - whenever MacG and Marlaina are with us, I pull out all the stops.  I make MacG squeeze coffee (my finest blends), I make him pork loin, I make him delicious breakfast sandwiches.  I'll even slip him Kashi Oatmeal Dark Chocolate cookies when Marlaina isn't looking (she doesn't like him to have the extra sugar).

Of course I felt like a shit after balking about making Ed some squeeze.  So I caved.

He got his coffee.

And honestly, it's not hard at all.  Literally takes two minutes.  But don't tell him that.

Elixir

My ribs are killing me from coughing.

My throat is raw.

I have no voice.

I communicate in a whisper.

So today in the truck, I made a big pot of chicken soup.  Chunky carrots, slices of celery, onion, garlic, the works.  Spooned over al dente orzo and served with a slice of crusty Tuscan Boule slathered with butter.  The soup was made from scratch, the bread store bought.

And the weather was cooperating.  Despite being the first day of Spring, it was cold and rainy here in North Carolina, a perfect day for steaming hot chicken soup.

Everything was delicious, but I certainly hope it has the healing power people claim it does, because I can't take too much more of this coughing crap.

Several years ago I posted a photo of my mother sitting in her La-Z-Boy, cat perched above her head.  I titled that post Woman With Cat.

Today I present to you Ed's mother, with her dog Mischa perched above her head.

Around Town In 80 Days

Well, really, 79 days.

We've been home for SEVENTY-NINE days!

But we're back to work now.  We just took our first load of 2016 a few days ago, all the way to Pennsylvania.  I can't tell you how thrilling it's been for me to see a landscape that doesn't include cactus.

This last visit home was very fun, very busy, and very productive.

We saw doctors, did yard work, got our DOT physicals (and passed!), hiked a mountain. Sort of.

And had lots of quality cat time.

One of the best parts of our visit was spending so much time with my brother.  He stopped by the house several times a week, which I'm pretty sure was only for Ed's monster breakfasts, but I didn't care.  Any time with him is valuable.

We didn't want to go back to work, but it was inevitable.  When we got the call for the load, Ed actually hesitated and asked if he could call back with an answer.  I don't think he was ready to leave the La-Z-Boy.

But he came to his senses and took the load, and we ran around like headless chickens getting everything together to leave.  That's the part I hate.  No matter when we're home, the day we leave always seems to come as a surprise and I'm never ready.  It took several hours to pack the truck.

The last thing we did before leaving town was have one last dinner at El Charro with our CBF (couple's best friend), Kim, and then hit the grocery store to stock up on at least a week's worth of food since the cupboards were bare.

The next thing I need to do is catch up on what's been happening in the industry.  I haven't read anything about trucking since before Christmas!

I'm looking forward to Spring, hoping for some good photo opportunities, and most importantly, meeting up with Marlaina and MacG - it's been WAY too long!

See you on the road!

Debonair

My cousin Greg from New York recently visited us in Arizona, which prompted me to look through some old photos.  When I did, I came across pictures of his wedding from August 2004, which is the first family event Ed and I attended.

This is a picture of Ed from that day.  It was the first time he met my family - my entire family - and he handled it like a champ.

Will you just look at how freakin' handsome he is!  It's no wonder everyone loved him.

A Few Blocks From Fort Apache

Longwood Avenue at Southern Boulevard
This is one of the main drags in the Longwood section of the Bronx.  Longwood is home to one of the highest concentrations of Puerto Ricans in New York City - very evident by the many Puerto Rican flags displayed throughout the neighborhood in windows, on fire escapes, at businesses, and on car license plates.

Served by the 41st Precinct of the NYPD, this intersection is less than a mile from the original 41st Precinct Station House, famously known as "Fort Apache".

Tiny Life

There's not much going on in these parts, so I bring you a photo of a train board we saw at a toy train museum in Indiana.

It reminded me of when I was a kid, sitting and watching my grandfather create tiny little dioramas in the basement and kitchen of his home in New York.

The Populace Of Winter

La Placita Village in downtown Tucson
Iowa, Alaska, Wisconsin, Indiana.  These are some of the license plates I see around town.

Snowbirds.  Everywhere.

Blue hair, electric wheelchairs, early morning traffic.  Where are they going so early in the morning??

You're either stuck behind one in traffic because they drive so incredibly slow - what Ed would call "the safest driver in Tucson" - or you're trying to get out of their way because they're veering into your lane.  Just yesterday in the Kohl's parking lot, Ed was trying to get the attention of some old guy who was driving next to us with a coffee cup on his roof.  We couldn't catch him.

They're not the only hazards on the road, though.

This type of year also brings college students.  They drive way too fast, with screaming loud music and hoards of kids spilling out of open top jeeps.  Sometimes they also veer into your lane.

Driving around Tucson I realize I am the in-between.

I am not young, like the college students.

I am not old, like the snowbirds.

I'm right in the middle.

Where annoyed lives.

Ed and I went to Lowe's today to look for wood to build a fence.  We left empty-handed, but with ideas.  Who knew there were so many fence styles??  I have to do more research before our next shopping trip.

I will definitely be accompanying Ed on the next trip because I didn't realize that the wood aisle smelled so delicious.

The Zombie Apocalypse Could Be In Full Swing And I'd Never Know

Today Ed and I dropped my mother off at her hair appointment and went to lunch.  She texted when she was done with her hair and told us she was heading over to Walmart to pick up a few things she needed, so we finished up lunch and headed back to get her.  I was going to text her when I realized my phone was dead so I asked Ed to do it.

I was pulling into the parking lot to pick her up just as Ed sent his text.  When we pulled up, she was standing outside waiting.

As she got in the car I said, "Sorry for not getting back to you, Mom.  My phone died."

"Michonne died???" She sounded frantic.

"Who's Michonne??" Ed and I said in confused unison.

"From The Walking Dead." my mother said.

I don't watch The Walking Dead.  You couldn't pay me enough to watch The Walking Dead. I have no idea who Michonne is, nor do I care.

"No, mom.  I said my phone died, not Michonne died. And why would I tell you about someone on The Walking Dead dying?  You know I don't watch that show."

"I thought maybe you heard it on the news or something." she said.

Ed and I looked at each other and rolled our eyes.

"Mom.  Even if I did hear it on the news, I wouldn't know who they were talking about, and it's unlikely I'd tell you about a character on a show I don't even watch, dying."

With hope in her voice, she said, "Well, you might have."

Nope.  Never.  Isn't that show about zombies, anyway?  And aren't zombies already dead? I totally don't get it.

And I seriously don't understand America's obsession with this show.

A Little Thing With A Long History

It's been ages since I've been to Cafe Poca Cosa.  The waiter said the restaurant has been in this location for over 10 years. It's probably been more years than that since I've eaten there.  And "there" really isn't "there" anymore because this is a new location.

The first time I went to Cafe Poca Cosa it was a downtown hole in the wall, six tables in the place at most, and horchata as their most popular beverage.  Then they opened a second restaurant nearby, which I'd been to maybe a handful of times, always at the urging of a friend because I hated going downtown. The parking has always been (and still is) a nightmare.

Now, Cafe Poca Cosa looks like something you'd find in LA or Chicago.  Sleek and modern, staff dressed in black, owner dressed in skinny leather pants and a flowing white artist's smock accented with statement jewelry.

Suzana Davila, the owner of Cafe Poca Cosa, is a bit of a star in Tucson.  And has been for years. Even Gourmet magazine noticed her.

The thing I always remembered about the restaurant is that you'd go in, sit down, and they'd bring a chalkboard to your table with the menu on it.  It was whatever she created for the day. She was famous for her mole.

That chalkboard menu is still part of the routine. And it changes twice daily.

This was the menu board on the day we went. I can't even remember exactly what each dish is, but as you can see, there are three chicken dishes, three beef, a salmon dish, two styles of pastel de elote (corn cake), and the Plata Poca Cosa which gets you a selection three of what's on the board - chef's choice, no substitutions or deletions.

I wasn't sure I wanted to do that because although I like everything on the board, I didn't want fish, but when the server told me we wouldn't get fish, I was in.  Ed ordered the same thing, so we'd be getting six completely different items, all at the choosing of the chef.

The place wasn't busy when we arrived but it filled up fast.  And people were mostly dressed up, in the middle of the day, for lunch.  There were a few casually dressed as if they just stepped in off the street, but the majority dressed as if Cafe Poca Cosa were a destination.
I don't remember what we ordered, but we were happy with it.  We each got a chicken, a beef, and a corn cake - I think mine was the zanahoria India (Indian carrot, which was like an Indian curry flavored carrot puree) - which is the yellowish lump on the plate.

Everything was delicious.  The meat was tender, the chicken was flavorful, and you can't go wrong with a corn cake.  The salad in the middle was artistic, served with a tall glass carafe of vinaigrette.

Look at the beautiful bunch of grapes and the tips of the dipped leaves.
The meal was very good, but I'm not sure I'd go back.  There are tons of Mexican restaurants in town, many I prefer, and the hassle of finding parking downtown is just too much for me to bear.  Granted, there's a parking garage now right on the same block as the restaurant, but it's still not worth driving around the block more than once trying to find the entrance.
It is an institution of sorts.  Ask any local and they'll likely mention its name.  When I was a concierge at the Westin La Paloma, this place was always included on the list of must-eat Mexican restaurants.

It's probably worth a visit if you've never been there, and it definitely isn't the typical cheese-and-enchilada-sauce-covered-cuisine many restaurants in this area serve, but don't get hung up on the fancy decor and see-and-be-seen vibe it generates.  There are tons of fantastic places for Mexican food in this town.  And although we had a great meal, I don't think this is the one I'd start with.

Shake And Rake

In the course of doing yard work, we added some new plants to the front yard.  Eventually we're planning to cover the entire area with decorative rock, but it was suggested that we put something down now to control dust and erosion.

We were told the Bosque del Bac Habitat Restoration Mix would do the trick.  It's composed of 33 species of grass, wildflowers, shrubs and trees native to the valley and foothills of Tucson.

We bought enough mix to do the entire area we disturbed while cutting down and removing all the dead stuff and debris the water that runs across the property brought through.  My job was to spread the seed, Ed's was to rake it in.

The mix comes in small bags and my first mistake was shoving my hand into the bag to grab a handful to sprinkle around - there are tiny little burrs in it that pricked my fingers! From that point forward, I gently shook the bag and sprinkled the seed that way.  Once I covered an area, Ed raked dirt over it.

Some of the seeds will germinate now, some in the fall, but the woman at the Native Seeds store told us it shouldn't be too long before we see something.  Maybe by the time we're ready go come off the road again, we'll be seeing some desert wildflowers!

In addition to the reseeding, we planted 21 agave plants and 3 barrel cactus. As I mentioned in other posts, we're looking forward to the final landscaping design but right now, this is a great start!
